Dance
I have been dancing as long as I’ve been walking! I have always loved to dance and loved to learn about different styles of dancing. My two favorite styles of dancing are tap and ballet and I continue to train with some of the best instructors around!
I have always appreciated the way you are able to express yourself through dance. The gracefulness you bring to movements through ballet and the concentration needed to perfect a tap step allow you to temporarily recreate yourself on the dancefloor.
When I was younger I used to dance competitively. I loved practicing my dancing and critiquing myself so that I could get better in between rehearsals with my teacher. Improving brought me so much joy and continues to bring me such joy today!
For those of you who don’t know much about tap dancing, it is actually a form of percussion. The sound you hear from tap dancing is from the “tap shoes” that have a metal “tap” on both the heel and toe. By doing different movements with your heel and toe on the wooden dance floor you are able to create different sounds and rhythms.
What I really love about tap dancing is that you can really monitor yourself while doing it. Once you know how the move should sound when done correctly, you are able to hear it when you mess up and fix yourself accordingly.
My tip for people starting out with tap dancing would be to bring a recording device to your lessons with you. Videotape or audiotape your movements with your teacher with the correct sounds and movements so that you can replay it wherever you are practicing and can recreate it. When you know how it is supposed to sound, you’ll have an easier time re-creating that right sound!
